Collecting an Antique Tea Kettle

Those who are unfamiliar with antiques will erroneously assume that anything that is “old” will be worth money. That is not entirely accurate. There are two types of “old” collectibles: those that have value and are commonly referred to as antiques and those that have really no value and are commonly referred to under the catch all moniker of “junk.” (Yes, these are those who consider antiques to be junk and also those who consider certain junk to be antiques, but that is another matter entirely!)

When it comes to collecting the antique tea kettle, there is quite a number of aficionados who go to great lengths to acquire kettles from different parts of the world and from different eras in history. A tea kettle that was made in years past was generally made out of cast iron, although copper was also a common metal used to mold the tea kettle. While one would assume that a tea kettle that was created over a century ago would be very difficult to find, one would be accurate in their assumption. However, the operative word here is difficult, not impossible! In fact, there are many dealers who sell classic kettles from the 1800’s, although the volume of available kettles is fairly limited and the costs are fairly high. But, if one can find such a tea kettle and can afford the price, then there is no preclusion from being able to acquire the kettle!

Acquiring an antique tea kettle, however, is not the difficult part. The tough part involves storing the kettle so it is kept safe and does not succumb to any degradation resulting from improper storage or use. Basically, the kettle will be wonderful as decoration, but functional use on a stove or open fire probably won’t be advised!
